Francesco del Cossa·1487
Historical Context
Francesco del Cossa, one of the most distinctive painters of the Ferrarese school, painted this Annunciation around 1487. Cossa is best known for his brilliant frescoes in the Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara. His sharp, crystalline style, influenced by Cosmè Tura and Piero della Francesca, represents one of the most original artistic personalities of the Italian Quattrocento. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with Cossa's characteristic hard-edged, crystalline figure style. The sharp linearity and intense coloring are hallmarks of the Ferrarese school's distinctive approach.
