Expulsion from Paradise
Historical Context
Domenico di Michelino's Expulsion from Paradise, painted around 1462, depicts the moment when Adam and Eve are driven from the Garden of Eden by an angel after eating the forbidden fruit. Michelino, best known for his painting of Dante in Florence Cathedral, was a competent Florentine painter who produced devotional and narrative works in the workshop tradition established by Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli.
Technical Analysis
Michelino's treatment follows the established iconography of the Expulsion, with the angel driving the shamed figures from a lush garden setting, rendered in the clear, descriptive style of mid-fifteenth-century Florentine painting.
