Madonna enthroned with saints
Jacopo del Casentino·1340
Historical Context
Jacopo del Casentino's Madonna Enthroned with Saints (c. 1340) is a devotional panel by a Florentine painter who maintained the conservative Giottesque tradition in the mid-Trecento. Jacopo was a founding member of the Compagnia di San Luca, the Florentine painters' guild, and his workshop produced numerous small-scale devotional panels for churches and private collectors. This work, now in the Dutch national collection, reflects the widespread demand for Florentine religious paintings across medieval Europe.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera with gold leaf on panel, the work features Jacopo's characteristic miniaturist approach with finely detailed drapery and delicate facial features. The enthroned Madonna follows the conventional sacra conversazione format, with saints arranged symmetrically against an elaborately tooled gold ground.
