Still life of fruits
Peter Binoit·1617
Historical Context
Binoit's 1617 Still Life of Fruits is an early work showing him developing the format that would characterize his mature production. At this early date, German still-life painting was absorbing the influence of Flemish specialists like Jan Brueghel the Elder, and Binoit's work represents the transmission of those Flemish techniques into the Frankfurt artistic milieu. The relatively simple arrangement — pure fruit without the elaborate accessories of his later work — reflects his early formation.
Technical Analysis
A selection of fruits is arranged simply on a flat surface or ledge, lit from the side with cool, even light. Binoit's handling already shows careful attention to the individual character of each fruit's surface — the roughness of citrus, the smoothness of plum — within a restrained compositional framework.
