St. Odilia and St. Cecilia
Master of Frankfurt·1506
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted Saints Odilia and Cecilia around 1506 in Antwerp. Saint Odilia, patron of Alsace, and Saint Cecilia, patron of music, were frequently depicted female saints whose combined presence may indicate a specific institutional dedication. The Master of Frankfurt's workshop produced such saint panels efficiently for the Antwerp art market. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's characteristic vivid coloring and precise rendering of the saints' attributes. The paired composition allows for decorative symmetry and devotional balance.
