Fitzstephen French, M.P.
George Hayter·c. 1832
Historical Context
Fitzstephen French was an Irish MP who represented Roscommon in the reformed Parliament. Hayter’s portrait study, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, was produced as part of the parliamentary documentation project and later migrated to an American collection. French was one of Daniel O’Connell’s supporters, part of the Irish bloc whose presence transformed the dynamics of the post-reform House of Commons. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.
Technical Analysis
The portrait sketch captures the Irish politician’s features with Hayter’s standard efficiency for parliamentary studies—a focused head study with minimal background elaboration.
