Jonkheer Jan Pieter Strick van Linschoten (1805-1881)

Johan Heinrich Neuman's 1875 portrait of Jonkheer Jan Pieter Strick van Linschoten belongs to the same series of Frisian nobility portraits that defined his career. Strick van Linschoten was a member of a distinguished Dutch family with Frisian roots, and his portrait by Neuman served the traditional function of commemorating a member of the established gentry. These portraits, while modest in ambition, form an important visual record of Dutch provincial aristocratic society in the mid-19th century. The work is now in depot at the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

Neuman applies his careful, conventional portrait technique to this Frisian nobleman — patient modeling of the face, attention to the textures of formal clothing, and a controlled tonal range that privileges clarity and dignity over expressive boldness.
