Four Boats at Grandcamp
Georges Seurat·1885
Historical Context
Painted in 1885 and now at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, this small panel of four boats at Grandcamp belongs to the series of harbour and coastal studies Seurat produced during his Grandcamp campaign. The moored or anchored boats—their sails furled, their forms reflected in still water—offered Seurat the combination of geometric structure and reflective surface that was particularly suited to his divisionist investigation of light. The Barnes Foundation's collection of Grandcamp panels provides important context for understanding the full range of subjects Seurat explored during this decisive summer.
Technical Analysis
The boats are rendered with precise attention to their structural forms, rigging lines, and reflections. The still water surface receives horizontal strokes of blue, grey, and reflected boat colours that create the characteristic shimmer of Seurat's water passages. Warm-cool contrast distinguishes sunlit and shadow surfaces.
