"A Montrouge"–Rosa La Rouge by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

"A Montrouge"–Rosa La Rouge

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1886

Historical Context

Rosa la Rouge — identified by her nickname as a red-headed woman associated with the Montrouge district on Paris's southern outskirts — was one of the prostitutes and demi-mondaines whom Toulouse-Lautrec depicted with the ethnographic intimacy he achieved by living and working in their social milieu during the late 1880s. Montrouge and neighboring districts housed the lower tier of Parisian sex work, and Lautrec's paintings from this milieu refuse the sentimentalizing or moralizing frame that other painters brought to similar subjects, presenting figures like Rosa with the unsentimental attentiveness of someone who genuinely saw them.

Technical Analysis

Lautrec's characteristic technique of thinned oil paint on cardboard — which gives his works their distinctive matte, poster-like surface — is deployed here with particular economy. The red hair is the dominant chromatic element, set against a neutral ground with the graphic decisiveness that marks his most confident work.
