Hampstead Heath with a Rainbow by John Constable

Hampstead Heath with a Rainbow

John Constable·1836

Historical Context

Hampstead Heath with a Rainbow, painted in 1836 and held at the National Gallery, is one of Constable’s last paintings, produced in the year before his death. The rainbow arcing over the Heath creates a dramatic natural spectacle that combines meteorological observation with symbolic resonance. Constable had long been fascinated by rainbows as demonstrations of natural law and divine beauty, and his late treatments of the subject carry an almost spiritual quality. The painting’s turbulent sky and vigorous brushwork exemplify Constable’s late style, in which naturalistic observation gives way to increasingly expressive and personal landscape painting.

Technical Analysis

The dramatic sky with its luminous rainbow arc demonstrates Constable's unrivaled mastery of atmospheric painting. The bold, expressive brushwork and the rich contrast between dark storm clouds and brilliant light reveal the intensified emotional quality of his late work.

Condition & Conservation

This late Hampstead Heath view with a rainbow from 1836 is in the Tate collection. As one of Constable's last paintings, it demonstrates his continued fascination with atmospheric phenomena up to the end of his life. The canvas has been cleaned and restored. The rainbow and dramatic sky effects are well-preserved. The work is valued both as a late Constable and as evidence of his lifelong engagement with natural light and weather.
