The Bradshaw Family by Johann Zoffany

The Bradshaw Family

Johann Zoffany·1769

Historical Context

Johann Zoffany painted The Bradshaw Family around 1769, one of his finest conversation pieces depicting an aristocratic family in the informal outdoor setting that was the characteristic format of the genre. The Bradshaw family are shown in the parkland of their country estate, their relaxed poses and natural interactions creating the impression of an actual moment of family life rather than a formal posed assembly. Zoffany's conversation pieces are among the finest documents of Georgian upper-class social life: the costume, the furniture, the architecture, and above all the quality of individual characterization give them an intimacy and specificity that distinguishes them from the more generalized grand manner portraiture of his contemporaries.

Technical Analysis

Zoffany renders the family group with characteristic precision, paying careful attention to the domestic interior and the individual features of each sitter. The warm palette and naturalistic lighting create a convincing scene of upper-class domestic life.
