A Couple of Foxhounds by George Stubbs

A Couple of Foxhounds

George Stubbs·1792

Historical Context

Stubbs's Couple of Foxhounds from around 1792 shows his ability to render working dogs with the same anatomical precision and individual character he brought to horses, applying his systematic knowledge of animal anatomy to a different species in the service of the foxhunting culture that was as central to English aristocratic life as thoroughbred racing. The foxhound portrait—showing two dogs of a specific hunt's pack, each identifiable by their individual markings—served the same documentary function as racehorse portraiture: recording the specific animals that were prized possessions of the landowners who commissioned the work. Stubbs's late career dog paintings demonstrate the breadth of his engagement with the animal world and his continued technical mastery in his seventies.

Technical Analysis

The two foxhounds are rendered with careful attention to their specific breed characteristics—build, musculature, and coat markings. Stubbs's anatomical knowledge extends to canine subjects with equal authority.
