Lamentation of Christ
Joos van Cleve·1491
Historical Context
Joos van Cleve was one of the leading painters of Antwerp in the early sixteenth century, known for his refined devotional paintings and portraits. This Lamentation from around 1491 may be an early work or attribution showing the emotional mourning scene. Van Cleve's style combined traditional Netherlandish craftsmanship with awareness of Italian Renaissance innovations. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty. The period's defining aesthetic — balanced composition, idealized figures, unified atmospheric space — was developed above all in Florence and Rome before spreading across Italy and Europe.
Technical Analysis
