An organ grinder (a woman of savoy)
Historical Context
An Organ Grinder (A Woman of Savoy) at the Pushkin Museum depicts one of the itinerant Savoyard performers who were a common sight on French streets. These traveling musicians from the alpine regions of Savoy were a popular genre subject, representing picturesque poverty and exotic charm. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The figure is rendered with sympathetic attention to her weathered features and modest dress. Fragonard's warm palette and naturalistic handling create a convincing character study.
