Jan Provoost painted this Annunciation around 1500 in Bruges. The subject remained one of the most frequently commissioned in Netherlandish art, with each major painter developing personal variations on the established formula. Provoost's version reflects the late Bruges tradition of refined devotional painting. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
