Portrait of Louis II de Bourbon-Condé dit le Grand Condé
Historical Context
This 1653 portrait of Louis II de Bourbon-Condé, the Grand Condé, depicts one of France's greatest military commanders. Teniers, who served as court painter and gallery curator for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, had access to the highest levels of European aristocracy. As court painter and keeper of the collections of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in Brussels, Teniers produced hundreds of small-scale copies of the archduke's paintings that were assembled into 'gallery paintings,' creating invaluable records of one of the greatest seventeenth-century collections.
Technical Analysis
The aristocratic portrait shows Teniers applying his naturalistic technique to a formal portrait commission, with careful rendering of military dress and commanding presence.
