Panel of Saint Michael
Historical Context
The Panel of Saint Michael by the Master of Soriguerola is a key example of Catalan Romanesque-Gothic transitional painting from the late 13th century. Created for a rural Pyrenean church, it depicts the archangel as a warrior saint conquering evil, reflecting the militant spirituality of the Reconquista era. The work is among the finest surviving Catalan altar frontals and is now a centerpiece of the MNAC's medieval collection.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on wood panel with extensive gilding, the work features bold outlines and flat color fields characteristic of the Catalan school. The geometric patterning of Michael's armor and the stylized dragon reveal lingering Romanesque conventions alongside emerging Gothic naturalism.
