David and Bathsheba
Historical Context
This David and Bathsheba from 1645, held in the Galleria Palatina at Palazzo Pitti in Florence, depicts the moment King David observes Bathsheba bathing. Artemisia painted this subject in her late career, during her Neapolitan period. The Galleria Palatina houses the Medici grand-ducal painting collection in the rooms where the paintings were originally hung, offering a uniquely atmospheric viewing experience. Artemisia had important connections to the Medici court from her years in Florence (1614-1620), where she became the first woman admitted to the Accademia del Disegno.
Technical Analysis
The composition balances the intimate bathing scene with the narrative tension of David's distant observation. Artemisia's mature Neapolitan palette is warm and luminous, with confident handling of flesh, fabric, and the landscape setting that frames the biblical narrative.
