la Présentation de Vierge au temple
Giotto·1400
Historical Context
This Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, dating from around 1400, is attributed to a follower of Giotto working in the late Trecento or early Quattrocento period. The subject depicts the young Virgin Mary being presented at the Temple in Jerusalem, an episode from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James that was a popular subject in Italian art. The painting is in the treasury of Bordeaux Cathedral. The continued production of Giottesque paintings well into the fifteenth century testifies to the enduring influence of Giotto's artistic revolution.
Technical Analysis
The composition follows Giottesque conventions for architectural scenes, with the Temple depicted as a simplified building that provides spatial context for the narrative action. The figures show the influence of Giotto's volumetric approach to the human form, though the execution reflects a later follower's interpretation rather than the master's own hand. The gold background and tempera technique place the work within the Italian panel painting tradition that Giotto helped to define.
