Esther before Ahasuerus
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this Esther before Ahasuerus around 1527, depicting the Old Testament episode in which the Jewish queen approaches her Persian husband to intercede for her people. The subject had strong intercessory resonance—Esther's brave approach to the powerful king and her successful petition for her people's safety—that made it a natural typological parallel for the Virgin Mary's intercession before Christ, giving the Old Testament scene a Marian devotional dimension. Burgkmair's treatment shows his mature Augsburg style: confident figure construction, warm coloring, and the architectural setting that organized complex court scenes with logical spatial clarity. The elaborate Persian court setting provided opportunity for the exotic costume invention that was one of Augsburg's artistic specialties.
Technical Analysis
The court scene presents the dramatic encounter between Esther and the enthroned king. Burgkmair's Augsburg style, enriched by Italian influence, brings Renaissance grandeur to the Old Testament subject.
