Maria mit Kind und den Heiligen Rochus und Lucia
Palma Vecchio·1514
Historical Context
Madonna with Child and Saints Roch and Lucy, painted around 1514, combines two important protective saints with the Madonna in a devotional composition. Roch, the plague saint, and Lucy, protector of eyesight, were both widely venerated in Venice and the Veneto, where their intercessory powers were regularly invoked against disease and affliction. Characteristic of Vecchio's approach, the work displays rich, sensuous color, idealized female beauty, atmospheric sfumato in the Giorgionesque tradition.
Technical Analysis
The devotional composition groups the sacred figures with Palma's characteristic warmth and intimacy. The golden Venetian palette and smooth modeling of flesh create an atmosphere of serene devotion.
