Christ as the Good Shepherd
Historical Context
Cornelis Engebrechtsz. painted this Christ as the Good Shepherd around 1512 for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The pastoral image of Christ caring for his flock emphasized the gentle, protective aspect of the divine shepherd. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents the pastoral Christ in Engebrechtsz.'s characteristic Leiden manner, with angular figure drawing and vivid coloring distinguishing his work from the more restrained Bruges-Brussels tradition.
