This 1850 Women on a Balcony Watching a Horseman at the Louvre depicts an Oriental scene in which veiled or costumed women observe a male rider from above—a subject that combined the dynamics of observation and display, seclusion and the public world, feminine interiority and masculine action. The balcony subject had particular resonance in French Orientalist painting as a space of mediated engagement between the domestic interior (gendered female) and the public street (gendered male).
