Aschaffenburger Triptychon: Der hl. Hieronymus
Historical Context
The Master of the Wendelin Altar painted this Saint Jerome panel for the Aschaffenburg Triptych around 1500 in Franconia. Jerome, one of the four Latin Doctors of the Church, was depicted either as a scholar in his study or as a penitent in the wilderness. The master's treatment reflects Franconian devotional conventions. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Franconian school's descriptive style and clear coloring. The scholar-saint is rendered with attention to his traditional attributes and the setting appropriate to his scholarly role.
