Aschaffenburger Triptychon: Geburt Christi
Historical Context
The Master of the Wendelin Altar painted this Nativity for the Aschaffenburg Triptych around 1500 in Franconia. Named after an altar in a church near Aschaffenburg, this anonymous master produced careful, competent altarpiece panels. The Nativity formed part of a triptych program narrating the life of Christ. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Franconian school's clear coloring and careful spatial construction. The stable setting and the holy figures are rendered with devotional warmth and descriptive detail.
