Himmelfahrt Mariens
Historical Context
The Master of Saint Severin painted this Assumption of the Virgin around 1500 in Cologne. The Virgin's bodily ascent into heaven was one of the most important Marian feast subjects. This Cologne master's refined style and warm palette were well suited to the celestial glory of the Assumption. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Cologne school's luminous coloring and refined figure painting. The ascending Virgin and the surrounding angels create an effective vision of heavenly glory.
