Maria mit den Nothelfern
Historical Context
The Master of the Heilsbronn High Altar painted this Maria with the Helper Saints around 1500 in Franconia. The Nothelfer (Holy Helpers) were a group of fourteen saints invoked in times of crisis, especially in German-speaking lands. The Heilsbronn Cistercian monastery was a major patron of religious art in the region. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Franconian school's clear coloring and organized figure arrangement. The multiple saints are arranged around the central Madonna figure in a composition that identifies each helper through traditional attributes.
