Altarflügel: Hl. Katharina (?)
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this altarpiece wing of Saint Catherine around 1510, a devotional wing panel from a larger altarpiece program depicting the learned martyr with her characteristic wheel and sword. Burgkmair was Augsburg's leading painter, and his altarpiece wings demonstrate the high quality his workshop maintained for both major institutional commissions and the components of private devotional programs. Saint Catherine of Alexandria—patron of scholars, philosophers, and educated women—was among the most frequently depicted female saints in southern German altarpiece painting, her combination of royal birth, philosophical learning, and brave martyrdom making her an exemplary figure for the educated humanist culture of Augsburg. Burgkmair's warm palette and confident figure construction give the saint both beauty and spiritual authority.
Technical Analysis
The saint is rendered with Burgkmair's characteristic blend of German precision and Italian Renaissance breadth. His figure style shows the influence of his Italian experiences, particularly in the monumental treatment of form.
