Christgarten Altar: Saint Jerome
Historical Context
Hans Leonhard Schäufelein painted this Saint Jerome as part of the Christgarten Altar around 1515, a major commission for the Christgarten Charterhouse in Swabia. The Carthusians' austere spirituality demanded contemplative images, and Jerome—the scholarly desert hermit—was particularly fitting for their monastic context. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel reflects Schäufelein's careful Düreresque technique in rendering the saint's aged features, with warm tonality suited to the contemplative subject.
