Christgarten Altar: Saint John Chrysostom
Historical Context
This Saint John Chrysostom forms part of Schäufelein's Christgarten Altar of around 1515, commissioned by the Carthusian monastery near Nördlingen. The scholarly Church Father was an appropriate subject for the learned Carthusian monks, who maintained extensive libraries and emphasized intellectual contemplation. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Schäufelein's refined technique for depicting scholarly saints, with meticulous rendering of books, vestments, and contemplative expression.
