Kreuzigungsaltar, linke Flügelaußenseite: Hl. Sigismund
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder, one of Augsburg's foremost painters and a pioneer of Renaissance style in Germany, painted this Saint Sigismund as part of a Crucifixion altarpiece wing around 1519. Burgkmair's 1507 trip to Italy profoundly influenced his art, and he became one of the first German painters to fully integrate Italian Renaissance forms. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The figure demonstrates Burgkmair's mature synthesis of Italian monumentality with German precision, showing confident modeling and the warm Venetian-influenced palette he adopted after his Italian journey.
