Kaisheimer Altar: Anbetung der Könige
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder painted the Adoration of the Kings for the Kaisheim Altar in 1502. The Epiphany scene, with its opportunities for exotic costume and splendid pageantry, was typically one of the most visually magnificent panels in altarpiece cycles. Holbein's version demonstrates his command of color and compositional complexity. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich coloring in the kings' exotic robes and gifts. The processional composition combines formal grandeur with the intimate moment of the kings' homage to the infant Christ.
