Fall of Christ during the Flagellation
Historical Context
Hans Leonhard Schäufelein, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg, painted this dramatic Flagellation scene around 1515. After leaving Dürer's workshop around 1510, Schäufelein settled in Nördlingen where he became the leading painter, combining his master's compositional rigor with a more expressive, emotionally charged approach to religious subjects. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Schäufelein's panel technique reveals Dürer's influence in the precise figural drawing, while the heightened emotional intensity and broader paint handling reflect his own developing style.
