Epitaph der Schwestern Walther: Verklärung Christi
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder painted this Transfiguration of Christ as the Epitaph of the Walther Sisters in 1502. Holbein was the leading painter of Augsburg, producing ambitious altarpiece cycles that bridged the late Gothic and Renaissance periods in German art. The epitaph format combined religious imagery with memorial function for the deceased donors. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Holbein's characteristic tonal sophistication and psychological depth. The Transfiguration scene is rendered with the luminous quality and careful figure arrangement that distinguish his mature altarpieces.
