Kreuzigungsaltar, rechte Flügelaußenseite: Hl. Georg
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this Saint George as part of a Crucifixion altarpiece's outer wing around 1519. As Augsburg's leading painter and a key figure in introducing Italian Renaissance forms to Germany, Burgkmair brought classical monumentality to German altar painting after his transformative Italian journey of 1507. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The figure of Saint George shows Burgkmair's confident Renaissance modeling with Italian-influenced proportions, set within the warm Venetian palette he adopted in his mature period.
