Kreuzigungsaltar, rechter Flügel: Der unbußfertige Schächer und die hl. Martha
Historical Context
The right wing of the Kreuzigungsaltar depicting the impenitent thief and Saint Martha completes the typological pairing of the left wing. The impenitent thief — who mocked Christ from his cross — stands in deliberate contrast to the penitent thief of the left panel, giving the altarpiece program a moral binary that reinforced the Crucifixion's central message about faith and damnation. Saint Martha, sister of Lazarus and Mary Magdalene, was chosen to complement this program through her association with active service and her role in the Lazarus resurrection narrative, connecting back to the left wing's Lazarus figure.
Technical Analysis
Burgkmair differentiates the impenitent thief from his counterpart through expression and posture — where the penitent turns toward Christ, the impenitent turns away. His Augsburg workshop technique ensures consistent quality across both wings: even paint surface, careful drawing, Venetian-influenced warm color throughout.
