Johannesaltar, rechter Flügel: Hl. Martin
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this Saint Martin as part of a Johannes altarpiece wing around 1518, during his years as Augsburg's pre-eminent painter. Burgkmair's dual role as painter and designer of elaborate woodcut cycles for Emperor Maximilian I made him one of the most versatile and influential artists of the German Renaissance. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The altar wing demonstrates Burgkmair's mature synthesis of Italian monumentality with Northern precision, showing the Venetian-influenced warm palette and confident figure modeling of his late career.
