Katharinenaltar: Martyrium des hl. Petrus
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder painted this Martyrdom of Saint Peter as part of the Saint Catherine altarpiece around 1512. The elder Holbein's late works show his fullest engagement with Renaissance spatial illusionism while retaining the emotional directness that characterized Augsburg's devotional painting tradition. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The martyrdom scene demonstrates Holbein the Elder's skill in organizing dramatic action within convincing architectural space, with expressive figural interaction and rich color.
