Allerheiligenaltar: Maria und Christus thronend
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this All Saints Altar panel showing Mary and Christ Enthroned in 1507 in Augsburg. Burgkmair was one of the leading painters of the Augsburg school who had traveled to Italy and absorbed Renaissance influences. The All Saints altarpiece was a major commission demonstrating his synthesis of German and Italian traditions. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Burgkmair's distinctive blend of German precision and Italian spatial grandeur. The enthroned figures are rendered with the warm coloring and atmospheric depth he developed through his Italian studies.
