Dornenkrönung Christi
Historical Context
The Master of the Freising Passion depicted this Crowning with Thorns around 1485 for the Freising Cathedral cycle. The scene of Christ being mocked with a crown of thorns was one of the most humiliating episodes in the Passion narrative. The Freising Master's treatment brings his characteristic emotional force to this moment of degradation. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the dramatic figure grouping and expressive faces characteristic of the Freising Master. The tormentors' cruelty contrasts with Christ's patient suffering.
