Christus aan het kruis
Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini was a conservative Florentine painter active in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. This Crucifixion panel, dating somewhat later, may be a workshop piece or attribution question. Niccolò's style was rooted in the Giottesque tradition, and his work for Florentine guilds and churches represents the continuation of traditional devotional painting into the early Renaissance period. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with gold ground in the conservative Florentine devotional manner. The Crucifixion follows established trecento iconographic models with symmetrical arrangement of mourning figures.
