Self-portrait of Gerard Dou
Gerrit Dou·1665
Historical Context
Gerrit Dou produced numerous self-portraits across his career as both personal records and demonstrations of his technical abilities. This late self-portrait of 1665, painted when Dou was approximately sixty years old, shows him as an established master at the height of his international fame—he had recently been offered an enormous sum by the French court to relocate to Versailles, which he declined. The self-portrait in later years serves simultaneously as a personal meditation and a professional statement.
Technical Analysis
Dou applies his signature fijnschilder technique to his own face with characteristic precision—the aged skin and reflective eyes rendered with the same meticulous smoothness as his younger subjects. The hands and costume are handled with equal refinement. The overall tonality is warm and controlled, with soft shadows and precise highlights.
