Die hl. Agnes erweckt den Sohn des Präfekten zum Leben (nach Tintoretto)
August Wolf·1873
Historical Context
August Wolf's 1873 copy of Tintoretto's painting of Saint Agnes raising the son of the Roman prefect from the dead records one of the great Venetian master's dramatic religious narratives. Tintoretto's originals — distributed across Venice's churches and scuole — were among the most ambitious religious paintings ever produced, combining supernatural subject matter with theatrical staging and violent chiaroscuro. Wolf's copies served the important 19th-century function of making these works accessible to German collectors and institutions. The Neue Pinakothek's collection includes several Wolf copies of Venetian masters, preserving these canonical works in Munich.
Technical Analysis
Wolf captures Tintoretto's characteristic dramatic lighting — strong chiaroscuro with figures emerging from deep shadow — and the vigorous, abbreviated brushwork with which Tintoretto animated even large-scale religious narrative.
