Portrait of Bismarck as officer
Franz von Lenbach·1900
Historical Context
Franz von Lenbach was the most successful German portrait painter of the second half of the nineteenth century, and Otto von Bismarck was his most important subject — Lenbach painted the Iron Chancellor dozens of times over several decades. This 1900 portrait of Bismarck as a military officer is a late addition to that long series, made after Bismarck's death in 1898, likely based on earlier sittings and studies. The portrait participates in the construction of the Bismarck legend that intensified after his death, as Germany mourned the architect of national unification. The work is in the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
Technical Analysis
Lenbach depicts Bismarck in military dress with the dramatic chiaroscuro and warm, Old Master tonality that characterized his portrait style. The face is rendered with the direct, forceful character that Lenbach consistently captured in his Bismarck images. Dark background and strong side-lighting give the image monumental gravity.
