Bildnis des Derick Berck aus Köln (Kopie nach) by Hans Holbein the Younger

Bildnis des Derick Berck aus Köln (Kopie nach)

Hans Holbein the Younger·c. 1520

Historical Context

This copy after Holbein's portrait of Derick Berck of Cologne reflects the original's position among his series of London German merchants, produced during his second English residency beginning in 1532. The Hanseatic traders of the Steelyard were among Holbein's most appreciative patrons, commissioning portraits that combined northern European pictorial traditions with the psychological immediacy he had developed through years of court and humanist portraiture. Original Holbein portraits were sufficiently prized that copies were made for family members who could not afford originals; this practice confirms the commercial and cultural prestige his likenesses commanded. The composition follows Holbein's characteristic three-quarter format with plain background.

Technical Analysis

The painting showcases Hans Holbein the Younger's precise draftsmanship, with luminous color lending the work its distinctive character. The palette and brushwork are calibrated to serve the subject matter, demonstrating the technical command expected of a work from this period.
