Entführung des Ganymed (Kopie nach)
Antonio da Correggio·1511
Historical Context
This copy after Correggio's Rape of Ganymede at the Bavarian State Painting Collections reproduces one of his most famous mythological compositions. The original, painted for Federico II Gonzaga of Mantua, showed the beautiful youth carried heavenward by Zeus in eagle form Oil on canvas, increasingly preferred over panel in the sixteenth century, offered greater flexibility for large-scale compositions The work is now in the collection of Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich.
Technical Analysis
The copy preserves the dramatic upward movement and atmospheric effects of Correggio's original. The figure of Ganymede carried skyward demonstrates the artist's revolutionary approach to depicting bodies in flight.
