Virgin with child and little John
Historical Context
Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, son and successor of Domenico Ghirlandaio, painted this Virgin with Child and Little John around 1512. Running his father's prestigious Florence workshop, Ridolfo maintained the Ghirlandaio tradition of clear, luminous painting while absorbing influences from his contemporaries Fra Bartolomeo and Raphael. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The devotional panel shows Ridolfo's characteristic clarity of form and warm palette, with the softened contours and atmospheric depth he adopted from the High Renaissance innovations of his Florentine peers.
