Isabella of Portugal with Saint Elisabeth
Petrus Christus·1457
Historical Context
Petrus Christus painted this devotional panel around 1457 in Bruges, depicting Isabella of Portugal alongside her patron Saint Elisabeth of Hungary. Isabella was the third wife of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and a powerful figure at the Burgundian court who was known for her piety and political acumen. Christus, who had inherited Jan van Eyck's position as the leading painter in Bruges after the master's death in 1441, was well connected to the Burgundian court and executed several commissions for the ducal household.
Technical Analysis
Christus demonstrates his refined Eyckian technique in the luminous treatment of fabrics and the careful rendering of Isabella's features, which appear to be based on life observation. The panel exemplifies Christus's characteristic simplification of van Eyck's complex spatial arrangements into more geometric, cleanly structured compositions.
