The Story of Nastagio Degli Onesti, part two
Sandro Botticelli·1483
Historical Context
This second panel of the Story of Nastagio degli Onesti at the Museo del Prado continues the supernatural narrative: having witnessed the ghost hunt once, Nastagio watches it repeat the following Friday, confirming the infernal vision's reality. The repetition was central to the story's logic—only a regular occurrence, not a single apparition, could be used as the psychological lever Nastagio needed to change his beloved's mind. Botticelli renders the second encounter with variations in figural arrangement and setting that demonstrate his command of sequential narrative while maintaining the story's visual coherence. The Prado's three-panel sequence allows the viewer to experience the narrative as Boccaccio intended, building toward the resolution in the fourth panel.
Technical Analysis
The pine forest setting is rendered with precise, stylized trees that create a rhythmic backdrop for the dramatic action, Botticelli's linear narrative technique guiding the viewer through the unfolding story.
