Portrait of Mariana of Austria
Diego Velázquez·1652
Historical Context
This 1652 portrait of Mariana of Austria, the second wife of Philip IV, was painted shortly after her arrival in Spain from Vienna. The young queen, who was originally betrothed to the Infante Baltasar Carlos before his death, married her uncle Philip IV in 1649 at age fourteen. Velázquez's state portraits of Mariana established the visual template for her image that would be replicated by court painters throughout her long career as queen and later regent of Spain.
Technical Analysis
The portrait showcases Velázquez's extraordinary ability to render elaborate court costume—the wide farthingale, silver-embroidered bodice, and towering wig—with apparently effortless brushwork. The dark background throws the figure into relief while subtle tonal modulations create spatial depth.
